Tamaz Vashakidze was born on the 14th of April, 1961 in the city of Tbilisi. His father Remi Vashakidze was the Head of the Transcaucasian Railway of The Traffic Ministry of the USSR, then — the first Head of the Railway Transport Department of the independent Georgia. Tamaz’s creative career was determined by his mother Meri Kamkhadze. From the age of five Tamaz went in for figure skating.

In 1972 he entered Tbilisi Ballet Art State School. His teachers were Vivi Metreveli and Vakhtang Chabukiani. Having graduated from the School in 1979 he was employed as the leading soloist of the company Tbilisi Z. Paliashvili State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. Since 1989 he is the leading soloist of the Moscow State Theatre “Russian Ballet”.

During his creative activity Tamaz Vashakidze’s talent was recognized in France, Finland, Greece, Spain, Russia, USA, Morocco, Malta, England, Germany, Puerto Rico, Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Denmark, Belgium, Monaco, Singapore, Holland, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Poland, Arab Emirates, Italy, India, countries of Latin America and others.

In 1991 T. Vashakidze was awarded the title of People's Artist of Georgia.

In 1993 T. Vashakidze founded a theatre of modern dance “New Georgian Ballet of Tamaz Vashakidze”. Its debut took place in 1994 with the first night of the “Class-Concert” performance at the International Ballet Festival in Aspendos, Turkey.

In 1995 he graduated from the St. Petersburg State Conservatoire named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov in “choreography”. The diploma defense — ballet to the music of the Seventh Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich — took place in the Big Hall of the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire. By decision of the State examination commission from the 17th of January, 1995, Ò. Vashakidze was conferred the qualification of ballet master (class of the People’s Artist of the USSR N. Dolgushin).

In 1999 the artistic director of “New Georgian Ballet” theatre Tamaz Vashakidze produced the first Georgian performance in the manner of modern dance — “Anbani”. Later the same year the ballet “Anbani” was presented at the International Modern Dance Festival in the French city of Montpellier.

In 2001 Tamaz Vashakidze in the function of the Director of the Tbilisi Ballet Art State School has initiated “Chabuakiani-Balanchine...” International Ballet Art Festival. The first festival was dedicated to 85th anniversary of the Tbilisi Ballet Art State School named after V.M. Chabukiani.

The same year by Decree of the Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze No. 892 from September 3, 2001, Tamaz Vashakidze was awarded with the Order of Honor for development and popularization of the Georgian ballet art (the renaissance of the georgian ballet school; activity directed on development and fortification of the relations between russian and georgian ballet schools, of the collaboration and friendship between creative workers of these countries; creation and popularization of the direction of modern dance in georgian ballet) and running the First International Ballet Art Festival “Chabukiani-Balanchine...”.

In 2002 Ò. Vashakidze started the Foundation “Chabukiani-Balanchine”.

In 2004 the artistic director of “New Georgian Ballet” theatre of modern dance Tamaz Vashakidze produced the ballet “The Big Waltz” to the music by Johann Strauss. The first night took place — for the first time ever in Balanchine’s home place! — on January 22, 2004, in Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Z. Paliashvili as part of “Memorial Night of George Balanchine”, dedicated to 100th anniversary of his great compatriot, as well as to the anniversary of Vakhtang Chabukiani.

“The Memorial Night” was honored by G. Balanchine’s nephew maestro Jarji Balanchivadze, who played on piano a medley from the works of Strauss.

In 2005 by invitation of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography of Russiathe artistic director of “New Georgian Ballet” theatre of modern dance T. Vashakidze produced the ballet “Big Waltz” on the stage of the Concert Hall named after Tchaikovsky (Moscow), having become the first Georgian choreographer, whose ballet first night took place on stage starring dancers from “Russian Ballet” company.

In 2006 the first night of “Big Waltz” happened in the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. Tamaz Vashakidze have presented modern choreography on academic stage (which is important!) and dedicated this production to the memory of G. Balanchine.

In 2007 the performance “Polyphony” (Tamaz Vashakidze was the ballet master and producer) was awarded “Grand Prix” of the theatrical award named after Yivan Kyrla.

In 2012 T. Vashakidze transferred his ballet “Big Waltz” on the scene of the Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Tbilisi

From 1991 to 1993 T. Vashakidze is the director of the ballet company of the Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Z. Paliashvili.

From 1993 to 2004 he was appointed artistic director of the Tbilisi Ballet Art State School named after V.M. Chabukiani by the Georgian Minister of Culture Dato Magradze.

Thus, after Vakhtang Chabukiani’s death the function of artistic director of the School was executed by his true pupil Tamaz Vashakidze.

In 2001 the artistic director of “New Georgian Ballet” theatre of modern dance T. Vashakidze was appointed director of the Tbilisi Ballet Art State School named after V.M. Chabukiani. In July 2004 following the arbitrary rule of the new Georgian political authorities he was unfairly dismissed from his post and persecuted.

Ekaterinburg

In 2006 Tamaz Vashakidze is the ballet master of the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre.

In 2008 the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre makes Theatre makes Ò. Vashakidze member of artistic management of the theatre as its ballet master.

In 2009 he became choreographer and producer of the performance “Khanuma” of the Sverdlovsk Academic Drama House (director of the production — Alexander Issakov, designer — Nino Kitia).

From 2010, 27 of May, the artistic director of “New Georgian Ballet” theatre of modern dance Tamaz Vashakidze is member of the Theatre Union of Russian Federation.

In 2010 by invitation of Alexander Kalmykov, Director General of the Russian State Circus Company “Rosgostsirk”, the artistic director of “New Georgian Ballet” theatre Tamaz Vashakidze accepts the function of director-producer of “Rosgostsirk”.
